❄❄❄Winter Weather Preparedness❄❄❄
The City of Red Bank Public Works Department continuously monitors weather conditions across our region. Spring and Summer storms are the greatest weather hazards to our city with the occasional significant winter weather event coming in every 2-3 years.
The City of Red Bank owns 73.74 miles of center-line road within our borders. The City of Red Bank Public Works Department begins preparing for such events by brining collectors and arterial roads, which tend to be the most heavily traveled roads passing through the city as well as the primary routes for emergency vehicles.
Examples of Collector Roads: Morrison Springs, Ashland Terrace, Dayton Boulevard
Examples of Arterial Roads: Ashmore Ave, Memorial Drive, Easton Avenue/Newberry, Appian Way, Browntown Rd, a portion of Delashmitt Rd*
*The City of Chattanooga maintains all of Gadd Rd along Red Bank’s northern border from Dayton Blvd to Hwy-153 while the City of Red Bank maintains Delashmitt Rd from Gadd Rd to Sherry Ln. Beyond Sherry Ln is the responsibility of the City of Chattanooga
As confidence in a winter advisory grows, the department follows the brine process by sanding/salting these same roads. As confidence in the local weather forecasts increases the same collector and arterial roads are first to be treated with ice melting agents. As the treatment coverage area increases the department moves transitions to secondary roads beginning with the steepest roads on the northeast and southwest zones. These zones tend to have hillsides that block sunlight and peaks that cause shading, also these areas tend to have more heavily forested surfaces. As operations continue, the department shifts to providing support for emergency service operations as fire and police are called out and discover problem areas that need to be spot treated.
Every effort is made to cover the entire city with the resources we have available. Since winter weather is seldom a concern, the city does not own substantial amounts of snow removal equipment. Our current inventory consists of one F-750 medium dump truck with a 4-cu yd sand/salt spreader, one International CV small dump truck with a 2.8 cu yd. sand/salt spreader and one Mack Mid-liner with a snowplow attachment for clearing main roads. The city has a substantial amount of road salt and salt brine for pre-treating roads. Staff for such operations consist of one heavy equipment operator and two laborers, with a commercial driver’s license.
Every effort is made to clear all roads. As our local weather forecasters and emergency services remind us, if you do not have to travel, please stay indoors and off the road during this type of winter weather event.
